ABOUT

Investigating the mapping of vast scales and immense ranges of phenomena to the human body in order to enable better understanding of the Universe is a worthy challenge for interactive design. How can we communicate astrophysical science with its physical units that fall far outside of our everyday planetary experience? Through interactive guided sessions with scientific visualizations that are mapped to the body we can access these cosmic scales in strongly physical, immersive and interactive ways, and the various sensory motor methods we utilize to present cosmic spatial and temporal data can help people more naturally extend their understanding. The processes and examples I will present were developed for both outreach and research, for facilitating public talks on scientific visualization and for advancing the use of immersive and interactive techniques and tools within the planetarium community whose major role is to open up natural experience to the Universe.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Julieta Aguilera

Dr. Aguilera studied Design at the School of Architecture, Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile. She holds two Masters of Fine Arts: in design from the University of Notre Dame, and in electronic visualization from the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with an emphasis on Virtual Reality and a focus on shared spaces. Because of these research interests, Julieta took a job at the Adler Planetarium’s Space Visualization Laboratory and eventually became the Associate Director of the Laboratory. While completing her Doctoral dissertation with the Planetary Collegium at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom, she worked for a year at the University of Hawai’i in Hilo, sponsored by the Academia of Creative Media and hosted by the ‘Imiloa Planetarium. Julieta has participated in and reviewed for various Conferences and publications related to Art, Science, and Planetariums and is an active member of these communities. The chapter “Immersive Media, Scientific Visualization, and Global Umwelt” is featured in the Handbook of Research on the Global Impacts and Roles of Immersive Media which was published in early 2020.
